PROJECT DESCRIPTION
SKIN is where music, art, performance, and film collide. Our goal is to create an experience that literally envelops the senses.
Artists often bandy about the term, but this show is the definition of multi-media, synergizing music, film and circus:
Live music accompanies multiple projected images with synchronized lighting. And performers are suspended from fabric while images are projected on their bodies as they perform acrobatic feats overhead.
Each song explores a different theme or emotion, some political, some sensual, some frightening, some hallucinatory. It has been described as a cross between Pink Floyd, Orbital, Cirque Du Soleil and Stan Brakhage. If punk rock and electronica fucked one night with the video camera on, SKIN would be their illegitimate lovechild who ran away to join the circus.
PERFORMER BIOS
KEVIN BOURQUE
Kevin Bourque was born and raised in California by famous insurance agent W. Ralph Bourque and wife Jean. Fleeing his home town of Stockton (which bears the highest per capita murder rate in the country and was the home of infamous child molester Ekhart Schmitz), Bourque attended UCLA, where he got his degree in Film and Television Production in 1991. While at UCLA, he directed a plethora of award winning short films including "In Transit" (a favorite on the film festival circuit and currently in worldwide distribution), and "Just Watch" (a highly acclaimed quirky animated piece). Upon graduation Bourque turned to music videos, directing clips for a bunch of underground and alternative artists including MACHINES OF LOVING GRACE, MICHAEL PENN and BIG CAR (where he met Mark Shulz—former guitarist of that now defunct band).
Bourque's work expands beyond the realm of the moving image, to include a series of iconographic works of art—a fancy way of saying he painted stuff. The artist claims to not really know what the inspirations for most of these images are, but he suspects that they rise from an estranged relationship with his mother and a general lack of fiber in his diet (he is making little or no effort to correct either condition).
And if that weren't enough, He played in a number of bands over the years including Krotch (voted LA’s worst band by the LA Weekly), obscure industrial band Tunnel Mental, alternative act Pudding and currently he plays with The Mutaytor.
He has also composed music for television specials including BREAKING THE NEWS on CBS.
He's worked as an editor for the past 11 years (everyone has a day job), working on projects as diverse as a documentary about Abortion Rights for The Feminist Majority to The Maxim Hot 100 Countown, The Victoria's Secret Swimsuit Special and Hillary Clinton's campaign film for US Senator.
He composed and performed most of the music in SKIN and created the visuals for each song (finally he gets to combine all of the arts in one project).
MARK SCHULZ
Former guitarist for Public Image Ltd. [wrote songs for and played on "ALBUM"] Mark Schulz currently is enjoying playing guitar, drums and keyboards for SKIN. Growing up in Canada, after a brief stint playing guitar with THE SUBHUMANS, Mark came to Los Angeles at 19 and started touring with P.I.L. After a few years touring and recording with various bands, including STAN RIDGEWAY and BIG CAR (Where is had the fortune of Meeting Kevin Bourque during a grueling music video shoot he hasn’t entirely forgiven Kevin for), Mark became a session guitarist playing on many records and movie soundtracks.
After contributing music to movies by directors such as Steven Soderberg and Milos Forman, Mark now makes a living scoring films. Most recent projects include "RICK" starring Bill Pullman and "AUTOMATION" Winner of best short film at Hollywood Film Festival. Oct. 2004.
SUZANNE BERNEL
Born with desert dust in her nose, motorcycle exhaust in her lungs and a gold can of Coors Light in her baby bottle, Suzanne Bernel first entered into this world via a mobile home park in Palmdale, CA. In her fourth year she was shuttled to her new home, the San Fernando Valley, the 818. Now that her fate had been sealed to always explain her formative years in the same context as “yes, the moon zappa song” and “yes, that movie with Nicholas cage” she threw herself head first into dance training and counted down the days until her sentence in the 818 would be lifted by a scroll of paper called a diploma. At 17 she escaped on the first bus to San Francisco with very good intentions of finishing her schooling as a dance major but was quickly distracted by cute boys and girls, hippies and funny looking cigarettes.
At 19 after years of rigorous training to expel any “valley accent” that was left she went to Europe with a small amount of cash and dad’s old Pentax manual camera. Suzanne has been a commercial and fine art photographer ever since. She went on to finish her undergraduate degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, help birth and run the non-profit gallery Collision in San Francisco and then go on to finish her masters degree in Studio Art at UCSB. Suzanne’s work has been shown in galleries in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Berlin, Frankfurt & London.
After spending time in New York, Europe and Thailand Suzanne found LA calling her home.
She threw her suitcases and motorcycle in the back of the pickup and hit the 5 south. As soon as the smog hit her lungs she knew she was home.
And it was here in LA that she was rejoined with performance through aerial fabric. You may have seen her hanging from the ceiling of the Key Club during the annual Choreographer’s Ball, or off a crane at Xara Dulzura and Joshua Tree Music Festival.
She now performs aerial with SKIN and provides all the photographic images projected on the Aerial fabric. She currently lives in downtown LA with her partner in crime Kevin Bourque and the psycho kitty Punum.
